Electrical faults in Barcelona
The faults we see most in Barcelona flats and why they happen
- The RCD trips when it rains: damp gets into terrace boxes, outdoor sockets or light wells. The circuit needs finding and sealing, not just flipping the switch back.
- Fuses trip with the oven and air con on: the classic summer fault. Usually a low contracted power or an old line that can't take the load.
- Older buildings without earthing: in the Eixample, Gràcia or Ciutat Vella there are still flats with cloth wiring and fuse boxes without an RCD. A real risk for your family.
- Sockets getting hot or burning: overloaded extension leads or loose connections behind the socket. If you smell burning, switch the circuit off and call.
- Flickering lights: a loose neutral or a bad joint. It looks minor, but it's worth checking soon.
- You need the certificate (CIE): to connect the supply after a renovation, in an empty flat or to raise your power. It's issued by an authorised installer.
